To give you an example of how key words work, in my shop today I noticed that someone had placed one of my items in a treasury by using the key words "castteam paper art". Because I had entered "castteam" as one of my key words for a card that I'm selling, the item popped up on the treasury maker's search and she added it to her treasury. You can also add the key word "cicteam" to your items and your items will pop up if someone searches for products with that key word.
Key words are what Internet search engines use to find information on the World Wide Web. It works the same way on Etsy, except that the search is limited to what is on Etsy. You can find out what key words customers are using that work for your shop by accessing your Shop Stats and scrolling down to the "Key Words" section. This section gives you information about how some people found your items.
Here are some good articles and one .pdf that I found in the Etsy Help section that will explain key words and search engine optimization.
